Hear works for instrument multiples on this New Sounds, for either multiple keyboards, or multiples of bowed string instruments – cellos, violins, violas including music by Nils Frahm, Shannon Hayden, & Peter Gregson. Plus, there are a couple of pieces for some bowed string instruments that are a bit more exotic, like a work by Donnacha Dennehy for Nadia Sirota & Liam Byrne, along with music by Caoiminh O Raghallaigh and Garth Knox.
There’s music for multiple cellos by British cellist and composer Peter Gregson, his “Minus” and then “Plus”. Also, hear a work for multiple strings - mainly sympathetic resonant strings- by Caoiminh O Raghallaigh and Garth Knox, where Ó Raghallaigh’s beloved hardanger d’amore is paired with Knox’s viola d’amore.
Then, listen to a work by Donnacha Dennehy – “Tessellatum”- for eleven layers of bass viol with five layers of Viola, as performed by Nadia Sirota and Liam Byrne on viola and bass viola da gamba. The multi-tracked parts, recorded in Iceland, combine to an ‘unrelentingly-beautiful wall of sound” with “almost-medieval textures through spectral vales to nearly-Celtic passagework.” Tessellatum will be released in August on Bedroom Community Records. Plus, listen to multiple keyboards from Nils Frahm, along with music by Shannon Hayden, a piece of motoric minimalism crafted with layers of cello.
